“Altered Book Journey” – Part 2

I have completed Part 2 of altering my book ready to do some work in.ย  I have torn roughly 1/3 of the book pages out and I have used Gel Medium as my adhesive to glue my pages together. I think I will be off to our art shop today to use my Xmas voucher and restock my gesso and mediums ๐Ÿ™‚

002I have it sitting upright so it will dry and I also put a heavy book on it for a while to flatten it out a bit.

The pages you have torn out can be used on other projects, to make flowers from and to use in collage, use in smash books, lanterns, bunting etc!

This is a good link on Pinterest for some more ideas ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope you have fun!

“Bit Inky!”

I have added a bit more to the cover of my altered book today, but wont do anymore now until I have finished it as I think it will make it hard to work on with stuff on the front cover!ย  I had to start another book, as I forgot to check the title and it is more a male themed, so will use it for one of my boys!

004 As you can see I sprayed two Dylsusion inks from the top and let it run down the book for a cool effect after roughly applying the gesso this time so a bit of the cover is seen.ย  After it dried I masked the butterflies.

005I am going to use my Viva Gold to give the butterflies a bit of shine and I will be adding some other bits and bobs later on. Tomorrow I will be attacking the pages of the book ๐Ÿ™‚

“Altered Book Journey!” – Part 1

I am in a scrap booking rut; you know when you want to be creative but the mojo has taken a ‘holiday’ย  This is me at the moment and I have been trying to think of a way to get out of it ๐Ÿ™‚ย  I think I need a break from creating layouts and just have some fun! I have decided to have another go at making an ‘altered book’. I made one for my mum and one about my rose garden a while ago.

What is an ‘altered book’ you say?

The International Society of Altered Book Artists defines an altered book as โ€œany book, old or new that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art.

Altered books are unloved, discarded books that are turned into works of art.

They can be part scrapbook, part art journal, part canvas, part mad experiment.

Altered books are a creative means of exploring your world. You have complete freedom to create something unique while recycling.

To me it is a book that has no use or is old and you bring it back to life by altering it with pattern paper, inks, paint, fabric anything you want to use! No limits, no rules just fun!!

I thought I would have a go at a challenge and make mine to include 100 things that make me happy!ย Mine will have photos in it but you don’t have to use them. I am not giving myself a time limit to do this or take the photos etc. I want it to be a project I can just enjoy being creative!

I also want to make one of my childhood memories with a lot of old photos that I have.ย  I thought I had a couple of old books, but no so I had a look in a couple of op shops this morning after work to see what I could find. I found four that have potential, and their binding is sewn which are much sturdier than ones that are only glued. You need this to make sure your book is strong and stays together as you are working on it ๐Ÿ™‚

I found this really good video to get you started with the process!

Below is basically my process for creating the skeleton of the book and then the fun begins!!!ย  This part is a little time-consuming but so important for your book to last!

2014-04-28 11.46.06

The first part of my process is to Gesso the outside covers so I can decorate, add paint ink etc. This gives a good surface and something for everything to adhere to.

20140428_150356I have done two books to work on and this one I added some texture to it by tapping my spatula onto it.ย  This will take a little while to dry and then I will be taking out pages and creating some to work on ๐Ÿ™‚ So stay tuned!

Hope you play along with me and create one for yourself ๐Ÿ™‚

“Merry & Bright!”

I have been working on a double layout this week, using four photos from out photo session at our Xmas family get together last year.ย  These photos are of my sister and I, my sons and my niece and nephews. I love these photos of us all together as it is getting harder and harder to get everyone together with our kids growing up, work commitments and our busy lives.

009I used my Xmas kit from Scrapbook Savvy for this one as I am a traditional girl when it comes to Xmas colours.ย  I misted a couple of large doilies for the background and a die cut shape for the middle.ย  I made the banners using my fringe scissors and some flowers using a my petite petal punch. In the kit there was also some Xmas Flair buttons, word stickers etc. I have a few more pics of mum and dad and us having lunch together and I will probably do an other double layout with those photos also. ๐Ÿ™‚

“Washi Delight!”

If you know how much I love washi tape then this layout wont really be a surprise!ย  I got lost at the Washi Tape stand at the papercraft expo and Ali took this pic of me drooling at all the colours and patterns available ๐Ÿ™‚

I used some more of my Savvy Monthly kit and documented my washi madness ๐Ÿ™‚

002I used an alpha mask to do the washi title with some texture paste and the clear work ‘delight’ is a little hard to see.ย  I added the vellum Polaroid frame, a bit of washi tape, a couple of resin flowers and coloured the doily with Dylusions ink ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Layout 5/50 for the stash challenge I have joined to get me using my stash. It is working and fun to find things I have forgotten about lol!!

Are you purging your scrap stash?

“Stencils and Masks Challenge!”

The weather has turned here in Victoria, and today it is very wet and dull!ย  I don’t need an excuse ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  I am doing a shift at work this evening and then my big son is taking me to the movies.ย  I thought I would have a break today and have a scrap. ๐Ÿ™‚ As most of you know I have a nice collection of stencils and masks to use in my scrap booking! I use them all the time and they are now one of my ‘go to’ products ๐Ÿ™‚ย  I am not really into all the arty stuff, but I like using them with paint, chalk, inks, stains, gesso and texture paste!

I thought I would have a go at this challenge at http://offtherailsscrapbooking.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/stencils-and-masks.htmlย ย  as it is what I love using and I wanted to have a go at using them in a different way! ๐Ÿ™‚

I found this tutorial of Heidi using a mask for stamping and I thought I would give it a go.ย  I used my Heidi Swapp Mega mask on the background and then stamped random images around it in Black Soot Distress ink.ย  I also masked the Heidi Swapp bird on the top right corner of the photo and used some chalk inks.ย  I used my She’s Savvy Kit from Scrapbook Savvy to create the rest of it and I am very happy with the way it has come together. I love the Thickers glitter alphas!ย  This is my 3/50 layouts I am creating to dig into my stash and use some of it ๐Ÿ™‚

The photo is of my sister and I outside the Melbourne Exhibition Building when we went to the Papercraft Expo a few weeks ago. We had a great day shopping together for our favourite bits and pieces and spending time together which is getting harder and harder these days!

Hop on over and have a go at this challenge and get out of your comfort zone if you haven’t tried using them
