“Altered Book Journey!” – Part 1

I am in a scrap booking rut; you know when you want to be creative but the mojo has taken a ‘holiday’  This is me at the moment and I have been trying to think of a way to get out of it 🙂  I think I need a break from creating layouts and just have some fun! I have decided to have another go at making an ‘altered book’. I made one for my mum and one about my rose garden a while ago.

What is an ‘altered book’ you say?

The International Society of Altered Book Artists defines an altered book as “any book, old or new that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art.

Altered books are unloved, discarded books that are turned into works of art.

They can be part scrapbook, part art journal, part canvas, part mad experiment.

Altered books are a creative means of exploring your world. You have complete freedom to create something unique while recycling.

To me it is a book that has no use or is old and you bring it back to life by altering it with pattern paper, inks, paint, fabric anything you want to use! No limits, no rules just fun!!

I thought I would have a go at a challenge and make mine to include 100 things that make me happy! Mine will have photos in it but you don’t have to use them. I am not giving myself a time limit to do this or take the photos etc. I want it to be a project I can just enjoy being creative!

I also want to make one of my childhood memories with a lot of old photos that I have.  I thought I had a couple of old books, but no so I had a look in a couple of op shops this morning after work to see what I could find. I found four that have potential, and their binding is sewn which are much sturdier than ones that are only glued. You need this to make sure your book is strong and stays together as you are working on it 🙂

I found this really good video to get you started with the process!

Below is basically my process for creating the skeleton of the book and then the fun begins!!!  This part is a little time-consuming but so important for your book to last!

The first part of my process is to Gesso the outside covers so I can decorate, add paint ink etc. This gives a good surface and something for everything to adhere to.

20140428_150356I have done two books to work on and this one I added some texture to it by tapping my spatula onto it.  This will take a little while to dry and then I will be taking out pages and creating some to work on 🙂 So stay tuned!

Hope you play along with me and create one for yourself 🙂

Happy Scrapping x
